Three Tips for Avoiding Energy Scams

Sadly, in today’s world it is not common for businesses to take advantage of their customers. Most commonly they do so for the pure reason of making more money. We have all received those phone call telling us we have won free vacations, or some King in a foreign country has bequeathed us a fortune. We can tell right away those are scams! Not all scams sound too good to be true unfortunately. These three tips will help you save money on your electric bills without the worry or fear of getting scammed.

#1 Request Proof

When you see advertisements for energy companies claiming that they can “cut your electric bills in half,” don’t assume they are right. Ask to see data and research backing up their claims, because it is illegal to make claims such as the one above without having research to validate the claim.

#2 Ask Others

Don’t be afraid to get second opinions. If you are in the market for a new AC unit for your home do your research online before going to the store. One of the first questions the salesmen will ask you is how big your home is. This is a valid question, but may be the start of a scam. If the salesman can recognize your unfamiliarity about AC units, he may try to take advantage of you by selling you an AC unit that you may not need. Before going to the store find out the recommended AC unit size for your home.

#3 DIY

Before going out and spending money on new products and services to lower your energy bills, try doing some home improvements first. Check your attic to make sure it is properly insulated. If you live in an older home, re-caulking your windows and doors is a great way to lower your electric bill. As windows and doors get older, their sealant wears down allowing cool air from inside your home to escape and letting cold air from outside in.

We all want to save extra money on bills and other expenses related to our homes. However, being safe rather than sorry can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. Cutting corners may sometimes lead to us into the traps of schemes and scams. To help avoid fraud and deception, do your own research, ask plenty of questions, and consider getting a second opinion.
