The Future is Electric

Is electric the future for the automotive industry? There are many advantages to owning an electric car- no fuel is required, they are environmentally friendly, lower maintenance and you can even qualify for tax incentives. Even though these features may be cost-saving over time, many consumers are unable to afford the upfront cost of an electrical vehicle. This lack of affordability takes away consumers’ opportunity to even consider owning an electric vehicle.  When purchasing is off the table, consumers are less likely to be exposed to an electric vehicle and its potential benefits. So, how can electric vehicles continue to make strides in the automotive industry when the majority of consumers are unable to experience their product? A purchase from Hertz may be the solution.

How Hertz is Helping

Hertz, one of the largest rental car agencies in the US, recently announced that they will be purchasing 100,000 units of the Tesla Model 3. Some of these vehicles will be available to customers in select U.S. and European markets as early as November 2021, with the entirety of the order being available to rent by the end of 2022. Not only will customers have the chance to experience an electric vehicle through renting a Tesla Model 3, but also an opportunity for an upgraded rental experience that provides education on electric vehicles and an expedited rental process.

In addition to offering Tesla Model 3s to car renters, Hertz will also be making a portion of these vehicles available to Uber Drivers in select cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Washington DC. Uber drivers will have the opportunity to rent Teslas for $300 a week. Hertz is planning to eventually expand this program nationwide.

Impacts of The Sale

This purchase from Hertz will have a great impact on both the Electric Vehicle industry and the energy sector. Most notably, Hertz’s purchase will make the experience of driving electric vehicles more accessible. The exposure consumers will receive from renting an electric vehicle for a day, or several days, will be much greater than if they did a test drive at a dealership. They will have the opportunity to truly see what owning an electric vehicle could be like, potentially pushing some consumers into considering a purchase.

As for the energy sector, this purchase points to a quicker transition to electric vehicles than some may have been anticipating. This means that utility companies need to start preparing to provide energy for an increase in electric vehicles. While this may have once been seen as a daunting task for energy providers, many are now embracing it as an opportunity to create new revenue streams.

Incentives of Electric for Consumers

The opportunity to have electric vehicles more widely available could be greatly beneficial to consumers. As mentioned previously, there are several long-term, cost-saving perks that come along with owning an electric vehicle, one of these being tax incentives. Many states and local utilities offer solar and electric vehicle incentives, often in the form of a rebate. These rebates can be claimed at or after purchase. Other states offer non-cash incentives for owning an electric vehicle.
